OHIO!
The U.S. labour movement scored a stunning victory this week as 61% of Ohio voters struck down the anti-union legislation of Governor John Kasich. Earlier this year, thousands of people swarmed the Statehouse in protest when the bill was being heard. Kasich and fellow supporters promoted the law as a means for local governments to save money. But labour and community activists formed a powerful coalition We Are Ohio which painted the issue as a threat to public safety and middle-class workers. It is estimated that both sides spent up to $30 million on the referendum. Private sector unions mobilized fully as well -- view the great organizing video. |

Congratulations to the Sault Ste. Marie and Niagara Regional Labour Councils for hosting successful Leadership and Stewards Assemblies last week. In both cases there were excellent presentations, great turnout and the development of good strategies for keeping the pressure on the Conservative candidates on our pension issue.
Please visit our website to find out about any assemblies taking place near you. I encourage you to get as many people out to attend. They are not just for stewards and union leaders, but for anyone interested in participating in the campaign.
Also, our radio and online ads are driving excellent traffic to www.betterpensions.ca and the Prime Minister and his cabinet know that we will not let this issue go until the Conservatives reverse the cancellation of their promise to expand the CPP.
