NEW DEMOCRATS CALL FOR BOOST TO URBAN ABORIGINAL PROGRAMS
Aboriginal Friendship Centres key to supporting increased population OTTAWA – With new data showing almost half of Canada’s aboriginal population lives in cities, New Democrats are calling for an immediate renewal of funding for Canada’s Aboriginal Friendship Centres, which provide support to the urban aboriginal population. “The Urban Aboriginal Peoples Study (UAPS) reiterates the importance of culturally appropriate services for urban-dwelling First Nations, Métis and Inuit,” says New Democrat MP Megan Leslie (Halifax), Critic for Urban Aboriginal Issues. “A vast number of services available for these urban-dwelling aboriginals are channeled through Aboriginal Friendship Centres, but the government has not made a commitment to renew the funding for these vital services.” The long-term sustainability of Friendship Centres requires increases to the funding levels that were established over a decade ago, funding levels which have remain unchanged, says Leslie. "Friendship Centres were not included again in the latest federal budget, and the government is throwing away an opportunity to invest in the long-term economic and social roles these Centres play in the communities they serve. The Centres provide a vast array of programming, all of which are being threatened due to crumbling physical infrastructure, obsolete technological systems and lack adequate funding to hire enough staff members." MP Niki Ashton (Churchill), New Democrat Critic for Post-secondary Education, Literacy and Youth, says Friendship Centres provide links with life-long learning opportunities, and are a nexus of services for a much larger population. “Friendship centres have provided vital supports for aboriginal people, particularly for aboriginal youth,” says Ashton. “Aboriginal youth are best served by culturally appropriate educational programs, provided by culturally appropriate organizations, something that Aboriginal Friendship centres provide on a daily basis.” Please take a moment to look at the following link to Irene Mathyssen's website, regarding garnering support for Bill C-476, which her office has asked to be circulated. http://irenemathyssen.ca/node/1047 McQuaig: Public better than private on pensions

ORAL HISTORY INTERVIEWS WITH WOMEN IN THE UNIONS
The London Women’s History Group chaired by Jane Bigelow is working with university students in Rebecca Coulter’s course, Oral Histories, Women’s Histories, to record interviews with feminists who were active in the London women’s movement from about 1960 to 2000. Please help us identify women in the union movement who should be approached for interviews. These are women who might have chaired or played important roles in women’s committees or caucuses, provided leadership in union locals, bargained for pay equity or conditions particularly important to women, organized for and with other women in shared causes such as universal child care, sexual harassment policies, fair employment practices and opposition to free trade. If you have women to recommend, please provide their names and, if possible, contact information and email your suggestions to coulter@uwo.ca. It would be helpful if you could include a brief note about each woman’s contributions. Thank you for your help. Patti Dalton, President LDLC. MESSAGE FROM LABOUR COUNCIL Communications

Last year autoworkers bore the brunt of media ridicule and contempt. Then municipal workers – specifically those who collect our garbage – felt the rage whipped up daily by columnists and talk radio hosts. At one time it was teachers, the favourite target of the common sense revolution. Although the focus is often on public sector workers, the attacks aren’t just about them. Today, miners in Sudbury and steelworkers in Nanticoke are locked in bitter strikes to defend pensions and benefits, while relentless outsourcing undermines the jobs of manufacturing and knowledge workers in the private sector. To read the full statement RESPECT and SOLIDARITY, or to download the flyer for circulation click here www.labourcouncil.ca/respectandsolidarity.pdf. **************************** STRIKE SUPPORT MEETING FEBRUARY 23RD It’s time to re-establish our collective ability to win labour disputes in Toronto. Employer demands for concessions have put Infinity Rubber workers on the picket line facing strikebreakers in south Etobicoke. Last summer, locked out Cadillac Fairview employees were terminated, and are still fighting justice. These are no ordinary times – we need to build our capacity to respond to this new employer offensive. We are asking every union to have someone attending this special meeting of the Labour Council Strike Support Committee. Tuesday, February 23rd, 5:30pm. in the Labour Council 4th floor Boardroom. **************************** SOLIDARITY WITH HAITI There has been an overwhelming response by Canadians in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. People from all walks of life are making donations to a number of reputable aid agencies are trying to assist those in need. But whether rebuilding will bring about a better society for the people of Haiti is an open question. Labour needs to apply a critical analysis to our solidarity work in this area. As reconstruction funds accumulate, pressure builds to expropriate what remains of Haiti's public services and collectively-owned land. Without a commitment for democracy and social justice in Haiti influence, the poverty and suffering will continue for decades to come. To read the Labour Council statement click here www.labourcouncil.ca/haitisol.pdf. To read Naomi Klein’s view http://www.naomiklein.org/main **************************** CITY OF TORONTO BUDGET Big business lobbyists are royally upset that the City of Toronto has not sold off public assets or drastically cut staff to meet the 2010 budget crunch. While the front page of the Toronto Sun heaps scorn on the Miller administration, the increase in residential rates still keeps Toronto with the lowest property tax level for homes in the GTA. Stay tuned for a massive battle between now and when City Council votes on the final budget. **************************** RETIREES ASK TOUGH QUESTIONS Over 150 retirees turned out for the Toronto Pension Forum last Thursday to exchange views with Peggy Nash, NDP MP Wayne Marston, and Liberal MP's John McCallum and Ken Dryden. Retirees from a number of unions packed the CAW 112 hall to ask tough questions about what could be done to protect retirement security. Good Morning Sisters and Brothers,
I write to you to ask for support for the CAW Local 302 workers at Longworth Retirement Residence , a Sifton Properties Long Term Care Facility and Retirement Home, as they struggle to achieve a fair and equitable collective agreement.
In February, Sifton Properties was named as one of "Canada's 50 Best Managed Companies". In addition, they were honoured with the London Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors Corporate Icon Award.
Despite these prestigious awards this employer has chosen to hide behind Bill 16, the Public Service Wage Restraint Act and refuses to bargain a fair wage for this group of front line health care workers. Much like the Extendicare group that we continue to struggle with, this employer continues to take the unacceptable position of applying the wage freezes of legislation that does not apply to the private sector.
The workers in this home are among the lowest paid front line health care workers in the Region.
Please join us once and again in a fight back as we continue our struggle to improves that lives of front line health care workers that work to improve the lives of those they care for.
A loud strong message needs to be sent that "Corporate Greed is Unacceptable!!" This corporation has not only walked away from negotiations but is trying to force our Members to conciliation rather than negotiate a fair settlement. Please do your best to attend an information picket on Wednesday August 11th to stand behind our fellow brothers and sisters who work at this long term care facility.
